What Is A Paralegal?
"A paralegal is a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible."-American Bar Association'
A paralegal may also provide limited assistance to private individuals. (See Services)
What Is A Notary Public?
"The most common function of the notary is to prevent fraud by attesting to the identity of a person signing a document. A notarization on a document certifies that the person whose signature is entered on the document personally appeared before the notary, established his or her capacity or identity and personally signed the document in the presence of the notary public." -Michigan Notary Public Act 238 of 2003
What Can They Do For You?
A Paralegal can review law, conduct research, prepare letters, e-file case documents and may provide direction in completing forms and where to find answers to questions. Under attorney supervision, a paralegal may also prepare legal documents, handle case processing and management, and support client engagement. However, a paralegal cannot advise what a client should or should not do regarding his legal matter, appear in court, or sign legal pleadings.
A Notary Public can witness and sign important legal and personal documents and may direct the signer in completing a document and to where he may find answers to questions. However, a notary public cannot advise what a signer should or should not do with his document.
